Public Services students joined by Thames Valley Police

4th May 2023

Four officers from Thames Valley Police visited the Abingdon Campus to speak to students on our Level 3 Public Services course.

Students were joined by two PCs and a PCSO who had all once also studied the Level 3 Public Service course with Abingdon & Witney College; both PCs were taught by the class’s tutor Gwyn Williams, who was thrilled to welcome them all back.

The Officers began the day with an introduction to the general roles and responsibilities of the police force; sharing with our students the types of career progression that would be possible for them after college. Each Officer provided an insight into what their typical day looks like, sharing the type of incidents they were called out to and what life looked like what it was far from the ordinary – such as their involvement in the recent Royal Wedding.

Our students also had the opportunity to hear from a recruitment officer within the force who gave an insight into the application process. Thames Valley Police have offered all students studying a Level 3 Public Service course a fast-track interview; an offer which many of our students were keen to take up.

Finally, our students headed outside for a tour of a Police car and van before trying on some kit worn in service. Two of our students had the chance to try on Riot Helmets and Limb Protectors – a process which was not as quick as they had initially thought!
