This course offers you the chance to try all sorts of different types of creative subjects to see which you enjoy the most. The course content includes photography, graphic design, sound and lighting effects, character design, costume and special effects makeup, music video and animation.

This course is a superb platform to start your journey into the creative arts. You will try a new project every half term to develop new creative and technical skills to find out what you’re best at. We will listen to your life plans and help you move onto the next step of your career. The course is structured so that you can aim to move on to a Level 2 course, a traineeship, apprenticeship or directly into employment.

The work you do will be linked to real life projects in college and the community. Students are encouraged to display their work, enter competitions and be enterprising.

Your maths and English skills will be developed at the right level for you, improving your chances of progression into employment and to the next level of education.
You will also do 35 hours of work experience to help you grow your employability skills.

Unit 1 - Introduction to materials, processes and skills in art, design and media
Unit 2 - Introduction to contextual research in art, design and media
Unit 3 - Introduction to communication skills in art, design and media
Unit 4 - Solving 2D creative problems
Unit 5 - Solving 3D creative projects
Unit 6 - Solving time-based creative problems
Unit 7 - Art, design and media project
Students can progress onto Level 2 courses in Art & Design, Media Production, Creative Production, Performance & Production, a traineeship or apprenticeship or employment.

There is a course consumable fee of £100 payable at enrolment which covers course materials, paper, equipment, an art kit and print credits for the year. You may be eligible for a bursary to help towards this cost.

There is also a fee of £20 for induction / day trips payable via WisePay at the start of term.

The total course cost is £120.


Due to COVID-19 we are not currently planning any trips as part of your course. If we are able to organise trips during your course, the cost of these will be communicated to you at the time. Trips are optional, and you will not be penalised if you choose not to participate. Bursaries may also available to cover the cost of some trips.

UAL Level 1 Diploma in Art, Design and Media
This course is 100% coursework, internally assessed and externally moderated. The grade for this qualification comes from the final unit, at Pass, Merit or Distinction.
GCSE retakes or Functional Skills qualifications in maths and English are assessed through external examinations.
