Our dedicated construction workshops are a great place to develop your professional skills, and to build your future as a site carpenter in the construction industry.

This exciting course in Witney will allow you to develop your hand skills and an understanding of site carpentry. You will learn how to keep yourself and others safe in the workplace, develop an understanding of the broader principles of the building process, set up and operate fixed machinery, carry out first and second fix operations and carpentry maintenance. As part of your study programme, a short work experience placement will help you to appreciate and develop the skills and attitudes employers are looking for as you prepare for transition to the workplace.

These are the units you will study over the duration of the course:

Health & safety in the workplace: covering H&S regulations, roles & responsibilities, accident reporting procedures, identification of hazards, handling materials and equipment safely, using access equipment and working at height, working with electrical equipment and using PPE.

Principles of building: you will learn how to interpret different types of building information, consider the environment in relation to construction activities, explain the construction of foundations, walls, floors & roofs and communicate in the workplace.

Setting up and operating machinery: giving you an introduction to circular table saws, morticers, narrow bandsaws and spindle moulders.

Carry out first fix flooring and roofing: you will learn how to construct roofing structures, fix verge and eave components, lay floor joists, fix and fit joist coverings.

Carry out first fix frames, partitions and stairs: you will learn how to fix frames and linings, construct stud partitions and fix a straight flight of stairs.

Carry out second fixing operations: you will learn how to install doors and ironmongery, fix skirting and architrave, install
service encasements and cladding, install kitchen units, worktops and fitments.

Carry out carpentry maintenance: you will learn how to repair mouldings, doors and windows, replace gutters and downpipes, replace sash cords.

The sector is famed for its endless options to learn new trades and skills, making it an exciting and interesting working environment. As a construction worker, opportunities to develop your area of expertise are plentiful, whether through a formal apprenticeship or full-time employment. There is the prospect of progressing up the career ladder or even starting your own business.
4 GCSEs at grade 3 and above including Maths and English at grade 4 plus a successful interview and assessment session where you can demonstrate the aptitude necessary for direct entry to this programme. OR successful completion of level 1 Carpentry and Joinery, minimum of E3 in functional skills English and maths, sucessful interview and completion of an assessment session where you can demonstrate your suitability for this programme. Adult learners may be accepted without these entry requirements
In addition to the main course fees given below there is an additional cost of £45 for kit / clothing £30 for a course trip and £25 for books. (Costs are given for guidance only.)

Due to COVID-19 we are not currently planning any trips as part of your course. If we are able to organise trips during your course, the cost of these will be communicated to you at the time. Trips are optional, and you will not be penalised if you choose not to participate. Bursaries may also available to cover the cost of some trips.

On completion of this course you will receive a City and Guilds Level 2 Diploma in Site Carpentry with Pass, Merit or Distinction grades for the individual units of study based on your performance.
Site carpentry skills are not something you can learn from a book. At Abingdon & Witney College it’s about ‘hands on’ learning. Fully equipped with the latest equipment and materials and staffed by our expert industry professionals, there is no better place to start your career. The majority of the course is based around practical assessments, with the underpinning knowledge assessed with multiple choice question papers and some online assessment. You will also study GSCE or Functional Skills Maths and English to support your entry to employment or further study.
Your time training at the Skills Centre will be packed with intensive practical experience and maximum working time with the materials and tools used in site carpentry activities. As well as practical skills you will gain a range of transferable skills including written and oral communication, team work and self-directed learning.
