Apply for this course

Explore an engaging variety of creative media and artistic approaches. Work on both relief and intaglio printing techniques. Through practical exercises and constructive support, develop your technical skills and take your creativity further. This intensive course is designed to help you to improve your printmaking skills, while presenting new challenges, ideas and approaches.

If you have previous experience you will work on your personal work with support from the tutor. This may be relief printing or intaglio. For those with little experience you will plan a technique to follow with the tutor and work on the process required to make your prints.

What you can expect on the course:
• To explore the creative process of printmaking.
• The use of available learning resources: smartboard, reproductions, handouts etc
• To develop your visual thinking.
• To learn about printmaking and its history.
• To use drawing to research, develop and record ideas.
• To apply visual language: line, pattern, shape, form, tonal value, colour and texture in relation to composition of printmaking project.
• To express your creative ideas through group discussion.
• The exploration and development of your personal style.

The course content includes:
• Composition.
• Introduction to colour theory.
• Printmaking materials and techniques.
• Experiments with style.

For the first session please bring A4 cartridge paper and your usual drawing equipment. The tutor can advise on further equipment you might like to buy.

There are no entry requirements for this course. All welcome. This course is structured to suit learner’s pace and prior abilities. This can accommodate complete beginners and those with some prior experience, including some who have completed a term of this course already.

Courses can fill fast, so please enrol early to avoid disappointment. Decisions on whether a course is to run are made two weeks prior to the start date - an email will be sent to you should there be changes to your course or if it is cancelled. Please check your inbox leading up to your course, including the junk folders. For anyone without an email account, our Admissions team will phone you instead.

For the first week of the course you will need to bring a valid form of identification; this includes passport, driving licence, debit/credit card, Birth Certificate or National Insurance card.

Please note - you should be 19 years old or over at 31st August 2020 prior to starting the course.
The specialist consumable fee set at £1.50 per hour covers materials provided for students to try or experiment with, as part of the planned study.

Courses offered by the college are fully or partly funded by the Government and the published fee takes account of this funding.

Before starting a course, the College is required to check you meet conditions relating to that funding, e.g. age, residency status within the UK/EEA, prior qualification level and employment status. In some circumstances (such as with online enrolments), these checks can only be completed after you have enrolled and paid.

If you are unable to pay in full for this course at the time of enrolment, and the course tuition fee is £300 or more, an instalment plan is available. If this is your preference, please do not enrol online but rather call the Admissions Team on 01235 216400 to enrol.

Once enrolled, Admissions will take the first instalment payment from you and pass on your details to the Finance team who will email you to set-up your payment plan. Please return a fully completed instalment plan to Finance as failure to do so could result in being withdrawn from your course.

As this is a non-accredited course, there is no formal qualification. However, you will be asked to complete activities that demonstrate how you are progressing on your course.
The main emphasis of the course is practical and teaching methods will include lecture, demonstration, individual practice, pair work, group discussion, quiz, exhibition of completed art projects, peer evaluation and 1:1 guidance from the tutor. As this course is non-accredited, informal assessment methods will be used. Your tutor gives you informal feedback. Optional homework between sessions will help you to progress. It is always beneficial for you to practice outside of the classroom. There will be some course paperwork to complete.
