This course is ideal for those with a keen interest in becoming more self-sufficient in maintaining their own car and preparing it for a service or MOT. Ideally learners will have undertaken the Basic Car Maintenance course or be able to demonstrate safe working practices within a workshop environment.

Using our state-of-the-art facilities, you will learn a range of technical and practical skills supported by our specialist Motor Vehicle staff. The course is ideal for those with a keen interest in becoming more self-sufficient in maintaining and servicing their own vehicle and preparing it for a MOT.

• H&S, tools and equipment
• Removal of suspension components including coil springs and shock absorbers
• Tracking / wheel alignment
• Tyre changing and balancing
• Timing belt changes
• General servicing
• MOT preparation
• Brakes
• Vehicle electrics
Working alongside our specialist team you will be given clear guidance and instructions on how to complete each practical activity and given constructive feedback to help to develop and master each technique. There are potential progression routes for further study within the College.
Ideally you will have completed the Car Maintenance Basic course or have experience of maintaining your own vehicle and can demonstrate safe working practices within a workshop environment.
Due to COVID-19 we are not currently planning any trips as part of your course. If we are able to organise trips during your course, the cost of these will be communicated to you at the time. Trips are optional, and you will not be penalised if you choose not to participate. Bursaries may also available to cover the cost of some trips.

This is a non-qualification course.
The teaching methods will be practical using college vehicles to enhance and develop your automotive skills and knowledge. Informal methods of assessment will be used, including self-assessment, discussion with your tutor and practical observations.
