Do you like being outdoors? Do you want to know how to help protect our countryside? This is a one year Level 2 course aimed at young people who wish to pursue a career in the countryside sector. This course provides a broad introduction to countryside, tree and conservation work while offering opportunities to enhance academic qualifications. You will be based at the Common Leys Farm Campus. This is the college’s land-based practical site in the West Oxfordshire countryside with purpose-built practical teaching areas.

There is a strong practical element to the course with students working in the grounds of Common Leys Farm and on near by estates. There are also many occasions when the group will leave the college campus and carry out tasks such as coppicing, hedge laying, tree work or habitat surveys on other industry specific sites. This will enhance your knowledge and understanding of the industry and give an insight into the types of jobs that are available.

Students study 6 units and there may also be an opportunity to study additional, industry relevant, qualifications alongside the Level 2 Diploma. Your mandatory units include; work-related experience in the land-based industries and environmental and land-based business. You will be trained in the skills needed to obtain your licence to operate a chainsaw.

Optional units may include; participating in providing estate maintenance, conservation and improvement of British habitats, introduction to land-based machinery operation and/or tree felling operations.

Assessment is by internally assessed coursework: written assignments, practical observation and e-activities.

Functional skills or GCSE English and Maths are integrated into the programme. These are essential skills for employment.

On successful completion of the course you may progress onto the Level 3 Extended Diploma in Countryside Management or seek employment in a range of jobs.
4 GCSEs at grade 3 or above including Maths, English and one Science subject plus a successful interview and assessment day at Common leys Farm where you can demonstrate your suitability for the programme. Or a pass in a level 1 vocational qualifcation, minimum of E3 in English and maths functional skills and a successful interview and assessment day where you can demonstrate your suitability for the programme.
As this course contains a strong practical element there are additional costs for personal protective equipment. Chainsaw trousers, boots, overalls, high viz and ear defenders are all essential if you wish to go into this industry. These costs associated with this equipment could be in the region of £300 - £350 but students can apply for a bursary for help with these costs. There is also a £25 charge for course trips. (Costs are given for guidance only.)

Please note, only those students wishing to take the additional chainsaw licence qualification would need to buy all the kit.

Due to COVID-19 we are not currently planning any trips as part of your course. If we are able to organise trips during your course, the cost of these will be communicated to you at the time. Trips are optional, and you will not be penalised if you choose not to participate. Bursaries may also available to cover the cost of some trips.

There are bursaries available to help you with other course cost, call 01235 216 298 for more information.

The 19+ full fee button displays the full fee that may apply, the rules on fee reduction are complicated and we would encourage you to talk to our Admissions staff on 01235 555 585 to discuss your options.
