The course will provide a brief introduction to cake decorating and will provide the skills necessary for students to create their own celebration cakes at home. We will be making a pretty celebration cake decorated with sugar flowers, suitable for birthdays or other celebrations.
We will be decorating a cake with sugar paste icing and learning how to create a smooth finish. We will also learn how to colour sugar paste, how to pipe with royal icing, how to use a bead maker and crimpers and model edible roses and leaves from sugar paste icing. By the end of the course the learner will be able to cover a cake and cake board with icing, colour sugar paste icing, make edible beads or pipe with royal icing, model edible sugar flowers from sugar paste icing including roses and leaves, make lettering from flower paste icing.
Please bring the materials below with you (please do not buy any materials until your course is confirmed as running):1.5kg ready to roll white icing A 7 inch round polystyrene cake dummy or 7 inch round sponge cake with enough buttercream to fill and cover the cake - about 300g (made with 100g of butter and 200g icing sugar)Cake board 10” round drum (thick board)Pastry brush (preferably plastic) A large and a small rolling pin (plastic if possible) Small sieve Sugar shaker with icing sugar Palette knife Small table knife with a flat blade or a small palette knife A cake smoother A pair of crimpers Piping bag and nozzles or piping syringe Small unused paintbrush Plastic pots with lids and a box to carry your cake to and from class Cocktail sticks Rose leaf cuttersA set of alphabet cutters (FMM is a good make)15mm wide satin ribbon in colour of choice 2 metres Food colouring sugar flair paste colours - Christmas Red, Egg yellow, Christmas Green or alternatively buy small packets of ready coloured ready to roll icing, Craft knife Clean apron and tea towel.
Tea/Coffee are available to make, with a small charge. Please bring your lunch with you.In order to reduce the use of single-use plastic water bottles/cups, there is a watercooler on site making it easy to refill your water bottle.Free parking.
