This is a course for complete beginners. The main aim is to help you to begin to 'get by' in the language. The main emphasis will be on your speaking and listening including some relevant cultural information. You will learn the basic way of greeting in a courteous way, also saying farewell. You will also learn how to introduce yourself with information such as your name, nationality and profession. Although the writing of the characters is not the most emphasised element at this level we will go through the basic strokes and stroke order as well as do some simple writing practice. You will begin to learn about some grammatical concepts, but this will be kept to a minimum at this level.

By the end of the course you will be able to

• have familiarised yourself with pinyin and the tones.
• recognise about 10-20 Chinese characters
• Count from 0 to 100, describing the Chinese numeracy concept
• Greet others, self-introduction and get to know people
• Talk about your Nationality, profession and family
• Ask and tell the time
• Order simple snacks (food & drinks) and shopping
• Ask & follow directions
• Book accommodation

The course will equip you with some knowledge on radicals for better understanding of the Chinese characters. We will also introduce some culture/traditions alongside the Chinese festivals, and some common sayings and taboos.

Please note there will be no teaching sessions on 08/04/2021, 15/04/2021 and 03/06/2021
