Whilst no job within construction is ever the same you can be sure that it will be exciting with varied career and training options. Our dedicated construction workshops are a great place to develop your professional skills, and to build your future as a bench joiner in the construction industry.

This exciting course in Witney will allow you to develop your hand skills and an understanding of bench joinery. You will learn how to keep yourself and others safe in the workplace, develop an understanding of the broader principles of the building process, set up and operate fixed machinery, set out, mark out and manufacture items of joinery. As part of your study programme, a short work experience placement will help you to appreciate and develop the skills and attitudes employers are looking for as you prepare for transition to the workplace.

These are the units you will study over the duration of the course:

Health & safety in the workplace: covering H&S regulations, roles & responsibilities, accident reporting procedures, identification of hazards, handling materials and equipment safely, using access equipment and working at height, working with electrical equipment and using PPE.

Principles of building: you will learn how to interpret different types of building information, consider the environment in relation to construction activities, explain the construction of foundations, walls, floors & roofs and communicate in the workplace.

Setting up and operating machinery: giving you an introduction to circular table saws, morticers, narrow bandsaws and spindle moulders.
Setting out bench joinery products: you will learn how to select resources and interpret information for setting out items of joinery.

Marking out bench joinery products: you will learn how to mark out items of joinery and understand the effect of marking out errors on work.
