Using our state-of-the-art facilities, you will learn a range of technical and practical skills supported by our specialist Motor Vehicle staff. The course is ideal for those with a keen interest in becoming more self-sufficient in the basic elements of maintaining and servicing their own vehicle.

The course content is focused around basic service and maintenance checks.

• H&S, safely use relevant tools and equipment for vehicle maintenance
• Vehicle safety checks and possible rectification including tyres, lights and all fluid levels
• Know the location and function of major vehicle components involved in the engine, chassis and cooling systems
• Full vehicle inspection
• Oil and filter change
• Battery replacement
• Changing all bulbs and wiper blades
• Brake fluid change

Working alongside our specialist team you will be given clear guidance and instructions on how to complete each practical activity and given constructive feedback to help to develop and master each technique. On completion, learners can progress onto the Car Maintenance Intermediate course.
There are no formal entry requirements.
Learners will be expected to provide their own Personal Protective Equipment (PPE), safety boots and overalls must be worn for all workshop’s activities.
Due to COVID-19 we are not currently planning any trips as part of your course. If we are able to organise trips during your course, the cost of these will be communicated to you at the time. Trips are optional, and you will not be penalised if you choose not to participate. Bursaries may also available to cover the cost of some trips.

The teaching methods will be practical using college vehicles to enhance and develop your automotive skills and knowledge. Informal methods of assessment will be used, including self-assessment, discussion with your tutor and practical observations.
