This course is designed for those wanting to work in the farming industry. The course combines both the theory and practical aspects of crop and livestock management. It covers the practical applications of agriculture as well as the advanced aspects designed to give you a broad spectrum of knowledge. A period of supported external industrial placement is an integral part of the course allowing you to work in a variety of agriculture establishments. You will get hands on with the lambing of the college ewes, calving, farrowing and daily care of all the college farm livestock including working closely with the farm veterinary surgeons.

You will be based at the Common Leys Farm campus where we have a range of livestock and agricultural machinery. You will get to use the new livestock technology centre fitted with up-to-date production farming equipment. You will get to assist with lambing our ewes and have the opportunity to assist with showing and selling of the college stock. You will also visit and have access to local farms, where you will see a range of different animal and crop husbandry methods as well as receive guest lecture sessions from industry professionals. Students will be working towards a study programme that will include their main vocational qualification, skills in English and Maths, tutorials, enrichment and work experience. These are essential skills for employment. Students will usually attend college 4 days a week from 9.30am -4.30pm.

At Level 3 you can study using different routes:

An Advanced Technical Certificate is covered in 1 year you will study 7 modules - equivalent to 1 A Level.
An Advanced Technical Extended Diploma (1080) – this runs over 2 years, you will study 18 modules in total - equivalent to 3 A Levels.

Methods of study will include demonstrations, lectures, tutorials, practical tasks and assignment work.

The course will include such topics as; Plant and Soil Science, Crop Production, Livestock Production, Estate skills, Machinery Operations, Animal Health, Animal Anatomy and Physiology, Farm Livestock Husbandry, Grassland Management, Farm Habitat Management, Workshop Practice, Pig Production, Sheep Production, Crop Handling and Storage, Land Based Engineering, Investigative Project, Work Experience and Business Management.
Students may progress on to higher education and chose to study further at university.
5 GCSEs at 4 and above including Maths or English and one science preferably Biology, a successful interview and assessment day where you can demonstrate your suitability for the course. Or a merit grade in a vocational level 2 programme, GCSE Maths or English at grade 4, a successful interview and assessment day where you can demonstrate your suitability for the programme.
In addition to the main course fees given below there is an additional cost of £150 for kit / clothing and £50 for a course trip. (Costs are given for guidance only.)

Due to COVID-19 we are not currently planning any trips as part of your course. If we are able to organise trips during your course, the cost of these will be communicated to you at the time. Trips are optional, and you will not be penalised if you choose not to participate. Bursaries may also available to cover the cost of some trips.

City & Guilds Level 3 Advanced Technical Extended Diploma in Agriculture (Livestock)
Assessment is by internally assessed coursework along with externally set and marked exams.
Students will develop a wide variety of management skills that will prepare them for work within the agriculture industry.
